Using chart reviews to evaluate a continuing medical education (CME) program
Conclusions Conducting chart reviews was a challenging method to assess provider performance. Future work to assess provider performance should include a qualitative component (in-depth interviews or focus groups) in order to complement the quantitative data and provide context for care and management decisions.PMID:36857207 | DOI:10.1370/afm.20.s1.3106

Chronic pain management in dermatology
Pain is a central component of illness and suffering, yet unfortunately it is frequently undertreated. In dermatology, many acute and chronic conditions are characterized by pain that may require therapeutic intervention in addition to medical treatment aimed at treating the primary disease. To date, however, there are limited recommendations or evidence in the published literature on pain and pain management strategies for patients with skin disease. In an effort to enable providers to more comprehensively and effectively treat chronic pain in the primary and multidisciplinary dermatologic context, these topics will be di...

Onychomycosis
is a fungal nail infection caused by dermatophytes, nondermatophytes, and yeast, and is the most common nail disorder seen in clinical practice. It is an important problem because it may cause local pain, paresthesias, difficulties performing activities of daily life, and impair social interactions. In this continuing medical education series we review the epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical presentation of onychomycosis and demonstrate current and emerging diagnostic strategies.

Impact of continuing medical education for physicians on the quality of cancer pain treatment in China
The management of cancer pain has gained attention in China since the proposal of the three-step analgesic ladder in 1986 and has been further improved after the Chinese Ministry of Health launched the campaign for “Good Pain Management Ward” in 2011. Erythromelalgia. Part I: Pathogenesis, clinical features, evaluation, and complications
Erythromelalgia is a rare pain disorder that is underrecognized and difficult-to-treat. It is characterized by episodes of extremity erythema and pain that can be disabling; it may be genetic, related to an underlying systemic disease, or idiopathic. Considering the prominent cutaneous features characteristic of the condition, dermatologists can play an important role in early recognition and limitation of morbidity. The first article in this 2-part continuing medical education series reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, evaluation, and complications.

Knowledge, skills and beetles: respecting the privacy of private experiences in medical education
AbstractIn medical education, we assess knowledge, skills, and a  third category usually called values or attitudes. While knowledge and skills can be assessed, this third category consists of ‘beetles’, after the philosopher Wittgenstein’s beetle-in-a-box analogy. The analogy demonstrates that private experiences such as pain and hunger are inaccessible t o the public, and that we cannot know whether we all experience them in the same way. In this paper, we claim that unlike knowledge and skills, private experiences of medical learners cannot be objectively measured, assessed, or directly accessed in any way. If we...

Do educational interventions improve prescribing skills of medical students compared to no additional learning? A systematic review
Med Educ Online. 2023 Dec;28(1):2259166. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2023.2259166. Epub 2023 Sep 18.ABSTRACTResearch suggests that medical students are not confident and may be ill-prepared to prescribe competently. Therefore, changes to standard education may be required to fortify medical student prescribing skills, confidence, and competence. However, specific education to write a safe and legal prescription is generally lacking. Furthermore, the term prescribe and the skill thereof is not clearly defined. This review compares additional education for medical students to no identified additional education or another education...
